FanCast guest columnist Lee Mitchell feels that maybe
Rio’s injury could well prove a blessing in disguise.
With news that Rio Ferdinand maybe missing from
Tuesday evening’s trip to the Emirates I would be lying if a little part inside
of me isn’t punching the air of delight, I believe this to be a blessing and will
certainly be glad to see Jonny Evans back alongside Vidic.
This is not because I have anything against Rio and
I do feel he is our best defender, but his form in the past few weeks has been
shocking and he is all over the place. You only have to look at his performance
against Spurs to see that he is at sixes and sevens at the moment and low in
confidence. I wonder if it is simply the case that either Sir Alex is playing
him through injury or the pressures of being captain are weighing down on him.
I know it is unlikely he will be dropped, when fit, but I just wonder if we are
better off with a confident Evans alongside Vidic rather than persevering with
him and waiting for him to find his form, it is not as if Evans is going to let
us down if called upon.
We have been wobbly at the back and it seems like an
absolute eternity since we were breaking defensive records for clean sheets. We
just seem easy to attack and break through at this moment of time and van der
Sar is called upon far more often than he is should. I’m not naive to suggest
it is merely down to Rio as you do defend collectively, but his shakiness is
causing concern and he and Nemanja are certainly not the solid unit they were in
the first half of the season, Rio has become the weak link out of the two and I
wonder if a week or two out of the firing line may serve him and United good.
