Would Dalglish be the man to unite Liverpool once again?

Liverpool has had a season of turmoil and disappointment. Questions are being raised as to Rafa Benitez’s future at Anfield. Is Kenny Dalglish the only man who can steer this ship?

As the blame game continues to roll around Anfield, the time is coming for some real solutions. Players have to look at themselves for some quite poor performances this season. The tasteless interviews given after games they have lost proclaiming ‘No more slip ups’ look ludicrous when within two or three games Liverpool slip up again. The Kop seem to be still behind Rafa Benitez and I cannot fathom such a position anymore. It seems maybe the only way Liverpool fans head’s could be really turned would be the appointment of Kenny Dalglish.

I think it is time for people to wake up to Rafa’s shortcomings this season.  He has done some wonderful things at Liverpool but it’s quite obvious now he has lost the dressing room. Tactically I cannot understand the two holding midfielders in games where really they should be attacking the opposition. Particularly matches at Anfield against lesser opposition. Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Portsmouth was testament to that. It was probably one of the Merserysiders best performances of the season and the creative playmaker Alberto Aquilani was given a chance to start.

An improving Lucas from the lost boy we saw last season still doesn’t seem the right to me. He has performed much better this season but does not possess the quality of Xabi Alonso. With the extremely talented Spaniard in the side, Liverpool they had a deep lying midfielder who could protect but always be extremely creative. Lucas is way short of that standard and though improving should maybe not be given a constant starting role. Deep player unrest seems pretty obvious, especially when you look at some of the performances this season. Albert Riera is being shipped off to Moscow after his damning comments of the Benitez regime. He told Radio Marca ‘I’ve been here two years and I know how he (Benitez ) is. He’s never sorted out a situation with a player by talking with him. He thinks he’s in charge and everything else falls on deaf ears. His dialogue with the players is practically nil.’

So would Kenny Dalglish offer Liverpool anything more? Rumours have begun circulating that the former club legend could make a sensational return to management at Liverpool in the summer. His affiliation with the fans would most likely reunite the club. Furthermore Dalglish will be able to motivate the players much more the Rafa Benitez is currently doing. He has won the Premier League as a coach at Blackburn and three league titles in his managerial stint at Liverpool in the late 80’s. One thing is for sure, Kenny Dalglish is a winner.

There are problems to such an appointment though. The Liverpool legend has not managed in the English top flight for over 12 years. This most certainly is a hindrance. The Premier League in particular over the past decade has seen a massive change in terms of pace and tactics. Kenny Dalglish would need to immerse himself in this quickly. Additionally would his appointment be the right one for Liverpool? He could be the owners dream in bringing together voices of discontent within the fans. It seems Kenny Dalglish is probably the only man who could cast Rafa Benitez quietly into the night without there being a riot around Anfield. I think Liverpool need to bring back some attacking free flowing football, tactics aside the club needs a motivator. I think Kenny Dalglish could be that man.
