Do Spurs hopes of signing Spaniard rest solely on Xabi Alonso?

Football FanCast columnist Roy James wonders if Spurs' hopes of landing Negredo simply rest on Alonso's possible move to Real Madrid.

One thing you must do with Harry Redknapp is take all his statements with regards to signing players with a pinch of salt. Last night Harry attempted to mask over the transfer speculation this week by claiming that he will be more than happy with his lot if no deals were to go through, but is he falling anyone here. Harry knows that the squad needs improving and failure to do so will be detrimental for our chances next season as there are areas in the teams that desperately need improving. One area that needs enhancing is upfront and a target man to complement Jermain Defoe.

We have been linked with a plethora of strikers and one potential signing that has seemingly been gathering momentum this week is that of Real Madrid striker Alvara Negredo. There have been rumours this week that he has already completed a medical in London, with a view to a move and it was only enhanced when the Spaniard's agent came out yesterday claiming that he was 95% sure that his client will be playing in the Premier League next season, although refusing to name which club it could be. I just wonder if our hopes of signing him and the reason the deal is yet to be complete is simply resting on Xabi Alonso possible move to Real Madrid, which is due to be resolved this weekend.

Real Madrid are desperate to land Xabi Alonso, however are unwilling to meet the asking price set on him by Liverpool. There have been reports that Perez is willing to sacrifice players in exchange and I wonder if that is the reason that Negredo, who has been muted as one of those to be exchanged, is seemingly waiting in the wings to see if Real are able to lure Alonso to the Bernabeu. Should Liverpool play hardball this weekend and refuse to do business, then Negredo will undoubtedly be free to join us with all the preliminaries including his medical already taken care of. I accept I may be entirely wrong here and putting two and two together and making five, but reading between the lines, I just believe that this is the potential stumbling block that is preventing us securing and announcing this deal.
