‘Summer’s most wanted’ – Romelu ‘Drogba’ Lukaku

Some of you may say who??? Well, if you are one of those people then how does the next Didier Drogba sound to you? Interested? Well read on.

The Anderlecht striker is not your average teenager. He is only 16 years old but standing at 6ft2 and weighing in at 14 stone; he could boast the physique of a heavyweight boxer. Despite his size, the Belgian striker of Congolese descent is very fast and lethal in front of goal.

With 15 goals in his 27 appearances, he is fast becoming the hottest young prospect in European football. Anderlecht have secured him on a 5 year contract but reports suggest that Chelsea have already tabled a £8million offer with a one-year loan back option. If he goes on to become anything near the player Drogba is, then he will be some player. In fact, the belief around Belgium is that he could go on to become ever more than that.

At just 16 years of age, his talent in frightening. Not fazed by the pressure of being a professional footballer, or in the knowledge that scouts from Manchester United, Milan, Real Madrid and Arsenal have all been to watch him. Tony Adam’s was reportedly sent to watch Anderlecht and ordered to make notes, only when Lukaku received the ball. Equally comfortable shooting with both feet and an ability to spin with his back to goal have helped him score goals throughout his young career. In all the youth teams Lukaku played for, he scored more goals than the games he played. When he was six years old, he joined Lierse and played there until he was 12. At Lierse, he scored 130 goals in 68 games. Then he moved for one year to Brussels and, since then, has been at Anderlecht.

His options are seemingly endless. A goal in his debut for the Belgian Under-21 side has even caused to media to demand his senior debut. While many young players would jump at the chance to join one of Europe’s elite, Lukaku has resisted any sort of temptation and seems set to stay with Anderlecht for the foreseeable future. However, money talks and if his performances this season are anything to go by, Anderlecht will be palming away the cash in order to keep hold of ‘the next Didier Drogba’
