England dreaming of World Cup glory

Dreaming is something that every England football fan and player will be doing this summer. Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand will be dreaming that he can lift the World Cup in South Africa just as West Ham’s Bobby Moore did over forty years ago. Wayne Rooney will be dreaming that he can score the winner in the 2010 World Cup final and put his name in history and be remembered as an England hero in the way that 1966 hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst is. And England Manager Fabio Capello, despite being Italian, will be dreaming of taking England all the way to the final and winning in the way that Alf Ramsey did and complete the greatest achievement of his and any manager’s managerial career.

England fans will be dreaming once more come the summer, but they will also be mindful of being heartbroken and going through the pain that they had gone through time and time again. From the disastrous penalty shoot-out against West Germany in the 1990 World Cup that no doubt still haunts Chris Waddle, Stuart Pearce and many England fans to this day, to the embarrassment suffered by David Seaman when he was lobbed by Brazil’s Ronaldinho in the 2002 tournament, England fans have suffered more than their fair share of pain and disappointment. We are all too aware of how hope can quickly be extinguished and turned to heartbreak, but that will never stop us dreaming and thinking that maybe, just maybe 2010 will be England’s year.
