It was built up as the do or die game for Steve McClaren and England’s European qualifying campaign and unfortunately it was to prove the latter as two goals in 4 second half minutes all but sealed our hopes of making the Euro Championships.
The last time England lost two qualifiers for a major competition was back in 1993 which resulted in them missing the 1994 World Cup. While our fate is not confirmed, it is out of our hands and all England fans are going to have to hope and pray that Israel can take points of Russia next month in Tel Aviv.
Steve McClaren has come out post game and commended the players for their effort, refused to blame the pitch and felt that the penalty was a disgrace. It is clear that the damage was done 12 months ago with the scandalous home draw with Macedonia.
No doubt the headlines tomorrow will point the finger at McClaren, Rooney’s reckless challenge or another Robinson error…where did the new exiting post Sven era, all go wrong?
