Fantasy Premier League captain choices ahead of Gameweek 18

Sometimes it’s sad to be a Premier League footballer.

While the rest of the continent’s best players can have a relaxing period during Christmas, the English top flight has no such thing.

On goes the football in the festive season. But it’s not only continuing, the league goes into overdrive playing almost three games in a single week from Boxing Day till the second day of 2016.

Players will definitely be rested in certain games in light of the hectic fixture list, however amid all the uncertainty, there is one that is absolutely clear… getting your captain choice right will be much more complicated.

The Christmas period is certainly when your vice-captain choice could be of great importance given the fact that your captain may not feature in an ‘easier’ game.

So without further ado, let’s dive straight into Gameweek 18 and see which players could provide you with a decent amount of doubled points.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane celebrates

One season wonder? Not at all. Harry Kane (9.7) is once again back amongst the goals with his ninth strike of the season against Southampton last weekend.

Up next is Norwich City at White Hart Lane, and with the Canaries only keeping one clean sheet the entire campaign, one would be foolish to back against Kane to make it 10 goals halfway through the season.

Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku (9.3) is right now the most in-form striker in the league, scoring in his last seven games for Everton.

At this rate, the Belgium international has the chance to catch Jamie Vardy and his 11-game scoring streak… but let’s focus first on his chances against Newcastle United this weekend.

The Magpies have turned their form around of late with wins against Liverpool and Tottenham, but their inconsistency and Everton’s attacking threat could see Lukaku once again get on the scoresheet.

Mesut Ozil

Ozil

This Premier League season may be one of the hardest to predict, but the amount of consistently good performances has been anything but.

While Jamie Vardy and Romelu Lukaku are scoring on a consistent basis, Mesut Ozil (9.9) is providing assist after assist for the Gunners, snatching 11 points with two assists against Manchester City last weekend.

And next up is Southampton, who are in a poor run of form of five winless games, with their latest a 2-0 defeat at home to Tottenham. They won’t be fancying a visit from Ozil and co either.

Sergio Aguero

Aguero1

Sergio Aguero (13.0) is arguably the most skilled player in the Premier League, but injuries have seen him struggle for form this term.

However, the Argentina international got 60+ minutes under his belt against a strong Arsenal side this past Monday, and he will be raring to go against Sam Allardyce’s struggling Sunderland at the Etihad this weekend.

He already hit five against the Black Cats’ rivals Newcastle earlier this term, could another hat-trick be on the cards?

Riyad Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez

Every week we think Riyad Mahrez’s (7.1) performances was a one-off, but the Algerian keeps producing the goods and is quite frankly the best player in the Premier League on current form.

He already has 13 goals and seven assists halfway through the season, and despite playing Liverpool next, many will continue to keep faith in the winger than scored 15, 13, and 21 points in his last three games.

Maybe it’s time to stop being clever and captain him every week.
