Football FanCast guest columnist Kev McCann feels that Fergie should look to Anderson to anchor the United midfield and reckons he could end up saving him millions in the summer.
One player that has a lot of United fans split then it is Anderson. This is not because he is not rated, because I doubt there are few that don’t, but how he actually fits in at Old Trafford and where his actual best position is.
We were debating this very subject at the Toll Gate on Saturday and to say opinion was differing is an understatement. There was a huge lobby suggesting that he is very much the long term replacement for Scholes, others felt he should be restored back to his natural position on the wing, while others myself included see him as the ideal man to anchor the midfield. His game is certainly best suited to it in my opinion, I mean let’s be honest he is hardly dynamite in front of goal.
Anderson is strong tenacious, decent tackler and most importantly he can drive forward ‘Keane esque’ with the ball. He has an abundance of energy, never gives up and his distribution with the ball is sound once in possession of it. I believe he would be the ideal foil for Carrick in midfield and not to mention the perfect protector for the back four.
Let’s be honest we have been struggling big time in recent weeks. After our record run of clean sheets we have looked suspect at the back and our defence has been continually exposed. Spurs in the first half controlled the game and it was easy for them to breakthrough as we didn’t have someone in midfield to grab the game by the scruff of the neck. Unfortunately with Hargreaves out injured we have lost that presence, and while the likes of Fletcher, O’Shea and Gibson have stepped in I don’t believe either have that combative streak to take the role on. It is an area that certainly needs to be addressed long term as us relying on Hargreaves to make a full recovery is a risk we shouldn’t look to take, especially when you look at how many games he has played in the last four years.
So why doesn’t Fergie give him the opportunity to make that role his own? Firstly, not only is he the best suited considering the players we have got at our disposal, in my opinion, but secondly and arguably most importantly could save us a small fortune in finding a replacement for the ever injured Hargreaves. He certainly has the game for it, all he needs is Sir Alex to have the belief in him.
