Fergie’s FIVE transfer options to fill inevitable void

Wayne Rooney’s damaging statement about the lack of ambition at Manchester United is one that will send shock waves down to the supporters. Manchester United fans can brush off disparaging comments from the likes of Alan Hansen and Graeme Souness, but from their top player – the signs are worrying. It seems as though both parties (Sir Alex Ferguson and Wayne Rooney) are waging a PR war against each other and Rooney could be sold as early as January. Manchester United fans should stay calm because there are some quality forwards out there that could replace Rooney at United. Here, we showcase five and see if they have the credentials to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres is without doubt one of the best strikers in world football. Fernando Torres has to be at the top of Manchester United’s wish list should Wayne Rooney leave the club. It would be the biggest transfer in English football history if Manchester United were to pull the deal off. Torres would offer United a new dimension to their play. United fans crave a player that looks to go in behind and commit defenders in the way Torres does. The fact that he knows the English game and wouldn’t have to acclimatise would be an added advantage. Torres would thrive off the service of Antonio Valencia (when he returns from injury) and would guarantee goals. United fans may be able to live with Wayne Rooney moving to Manchester City if Torres made the switch to Old Trafford.

Sergio Aguero

A target for both Chelsea and Manchester United over the years. The Argentine international has stayed loyal to Atletico Madrid but he has hinted of a possible move to England. Sergio Aguero will offer United a great eye for goal as well being able to move wide and would suit both a 4-4-2 formation and 4-3-3. The Argentine was a spectator for most of the World Cup but the experience of being around Carlos Tevez and Lionel Messi would have done the striker a world of good. Aguero is still young and would be the type of player Ferguson would want – based on market value and would retain a sizeable resale value.

Diego Forlan

Diego Forlan is a player that Manchester United fans adore. His name is still sung out on the terraces of Old Trafford even though he never quite made it at United. However, the Uruguayan moved to Villarreal in 2004 and has never looked back. He had a one in two goals scoring record for the yellow submarine and continued his form with Atletico Madrid. Forlan knows the club, knows how things work and with better experience could make a move work at Old Trafford. Without a doubt he has proven the critics wrong and would give United both Champions League and World Cup experience. It would be interesting to see if Ferguson would buy him back for more than he sold him for in 2004 but if targets fall away, it might be a safe transfer for Ferguson.

Luiz Suarez

What Luiz Suarez will offer Manchester United is goals. Suarez has an incredible goal scoring record for Ajax netting 81 goals in 104 appearances. Doubters have always pointed out that he has scored these goals in Holland, a standard well below the Premiership. However, Suarez scored three goals in six World Cup matches this summer and was a star for Uruguay as they reached the semi finals. As well as goals, the Uruguayan has a very decent assist record and would fit into the Manchester United ethos. Will a Berbatov Suarez combination excite United fans? Suarez has continued his form this season, scoring 11 times in 14 appearances. Suarez should be on the top of Ferguson’s shopping list.

Karim Benzema

A long term target for Manchester United, Karim Benzema has struggled to find his best form at the Bernabeu – resulting in his surprise omission from the France World Cup squad. Benzema was signed from under the noses of Manchester United by Real Madrid in 2009 after netting 43 goals in 112 attempts for Lyon. The Frenchman also has a decent international record, scoring 10 goals in 33 appearances for Les Bleus. Sir Alex Ferguson may look past the fact that he has only netted three times this season due to the rotation the Real Madrid front men have endured this season. United may have to battle with the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham who are said to be keen on his signature.
