Liverpool’s aim this summer should be to continue on from the pace they set with the signings of Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge this past January. Do away with the mindless spending close to home and explore the many alternatives available on the continent.
Brendan Rodgers may not have the financial means to be reckless this summer. That was the approach when the club splashed out for Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson, among others. What was the long-term plan with those players? With Coutinho, there is an obvious leaning to a particular style of play, as well as a certain profile of player.
It shouldn’t be all glamour for Liverpool, and many aspects will ensure that they don’t have first choice of some of Europe’s best. But Liverpool need a plan in place and need to go ahead with their transfer business early. Coutinho shouldn’t be the exception.
