Forget Benzema…Higuain is who Sir Alex should spend his millions on!

One shot on target. One goal. One-nil victory over Germany. For Gonzalo Higuain this is normal, for Maradona it was a realisation, and for the whole of Argentina it was a sign of hope.

Lionel Messi may have more goals for Barcelona but it is his team-mate and rival at Real Madrid who has had their home country talking after his performance in last week’s friendly in Germany. Finally, Maradona has realised what the Albiceleste fans have been thinking for a while; Higuain is the man to wear the no.9 this summer. While the legend has persisted with the likes of Tevez, Millito and Aguero, it seems the one man he’d over-looked was Gonzalo Higuain. Well, under-estimate him at your peril. A certain Manuel Pellegrini might not have a job if it wasn’t for the form of his less glamorous striker.

While Ronaldo, Kaka and Benzema stole the summer headlines, Higuain has been the man keeping Real in the title race. Higuain notched 22 goals in 31 league appearances last season and has gone on to improve on that this season with 16 in just 15 games.

Having joined from River Plate as one of the hottest young talents in South America of the last decade, Real were seemingly confused as to where to play him. A number of mixed performances saw him utilised as a midfielder, winger, second striker and lone forward until finally finding his place last season. One thing that was evident in all of those positions was willingness to battle. He has a work-rate that has turned him into a fans favourite at Los Blancos and his accuracy in front of goal has put the whole of Europe on high alert.

Both teams in Manchester as well as a host of other European clubs have all been linked with the player who has already stated that his wish is to play out his career at the Bernabeu. While many players would use that sort of statement to yield a higher wage, with Higuain you sense it is a comment fuelled by pure honesty. He is a Galactico on merit, not on a price-tag or an oversized ego.

Four international caps have seen him score two goals. If he can replicate his club form in this summer’s World Cup, the World will truly be his oyster; don’t bank on him going anywhere though. Even Florentino Perez will be able to see that his real galactico is already in his team!
