Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has been falsely reported to have caught Ebola by Twitter user @YuryAlkaev.
An online Nigerian news portal known as NGR were hit with tweets from @YuryAlkaev claiming that the now AC Milan ace has contracted the infamous disease.
The hoaxed story spread quickly through the social networks, forcing AC Milan to quickly deny the reports with Essien himself replying: “No truth in internet rumours that I have contracted Ebola. I’m very well & I’m doing very good & will be training as usual tomorrow. #falsenews
This is a cruel attack on the Ghanaian, and we hope that the person behind @YuryAlkaev – who pretended to be a reporter – will get what he deserves for such inconsiderate behaviour.
Over 8,000 people have been infected by the disease, with more than half dying.
AC Milan spokesman Riccardo Coli says “It has come to a big shock to everyone involved with the club but we are optimistic for Essien…”
