What should West Ham do with Freddie Sears?

SearsFootball FanCast columnist Johnny Moon wonders if West Ham should be open to offers for Freddie Sears.

They say you wait for a London bus and three turn up at once and the same can be said looking at the plethora of young strikers coming through at Upton Park.

In the old days you would be lucky to get one coming through the system upfront, but in reserve we now have Terry Dixon, Frank Nouble, Zavon Hines and of course Freddie Sears who is out on loan to Crystal Palace. It is an embarrassment of riches for Gianfranco and he’ll certainly have a selection headache upon him in the coming seasons.

It is a nice position for Zola and the club to be in; however at the same time we must be fully aware that we can’t play all and keep them satisfied in terms of regular first team games, therefore the club needs to weigh up who the better prospects are and which ones should be moved on if an appropriate fee was to come in. The reason for me bringing this up is the rumours that Palace are weighing up a move for Freddie Sears and making his loan a permanent one.

We all know Sears’ reputation coming through the ranks, with many tipping him to be the ‘New Tony Cottee’ and while he has showed flashes of promise, I ask myself whether Zavon Hines has eclipsed him at Upton Park as our hot striking prospect. My own personal view is that he has and he has popped up with some vital goals and he seems to have seized all the opportunities he has been given – Hines in my opinion has more to his game and offers a greater potential.

Perhaps I am being harsh on Sears and maybe he deserves another shot at Upton Park, but should Palace come in and make a decent offer, wouldn’t we be wise to cash in? Our money problems as we know are well documented, therefore I just wonder if selling the likes of Sears and other fringe players would be far better than cashing in on a big star like Green, Upson, Behrami or Cole; whose presence at the football club is far more significant in our current plight in staying in the Premier League. Sears has great potential, but the same can be said of Hines, Nouble and Dixon.

Should West Ham seriously consider offers for Freddie Sears, or do you feel he still has plenty to give West Ham?
