For the Boxing Day games I’ve gone for a classic counter attack finished off superbly by Tottenham’s Rafael Van der Vaart. For the Spurs fans who had travelled up to Villa for the game, they were treated to a late Christmas present as their team scored an almost equally impressive first goal again by Van der Vaart but orchestrated by Luka Modric in an open and entertaining first half.
Needless to say Jermain Defoe’s sending off on 27 minutes changed the game and in the second half Aston Villa were in the ascendency. Yet in a performance that epitomised a new spirit at Tottenham, rather than crumbling at a difficult away ground and down to ten men, they were able to rally and play on the counter. A move started by Van der Vaart deep in his own half soon had Gareth Bale scampering down the right flank to find Lennon who looked up and fed Van der Vaart to deliver a composed finish.
