Looking back at some of the best games of the 90s, there really is only one place to start: Anfield, April 3rd 1996. Title chasing Newcastle United led by former Kop hero Kevin Keegan, took on Liverpool with hopes of winning their first league crown in 69 years.

Inspired by the brilliance of Eric Cantona, Manchester United had leap-frogged Newcastle at the top of the league and Keegan knew that he could settle for nothing but a win. Liverpool themselves were sat in third and still in with a shout at the title. It was perfectly poised.

The game swung back-and-forth until the very last kick of the game. After Stan Collymore powered the ball home to make it 4-3 and ultimately win the game for the home side, the match-day commentator, Martin Tyler, treated us to one of those lines which we will always remember – “Collymore closing in, Liverpool lead in stoppage time!”
