Why Hamsik would provide a better alternative at Old Trafford

Whilst the rumour mill surrounding Aston Villa midfielder James Milner goes into overdrive following reports of a move to Manchester United. Maybe United should look instead at Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik.

The 22 yr old Slovakian international midfielder has had something of a rise in prominence over the past two years. Coveted by many of Europe’s elite, the attacking midfielder has been lighting up Serie A for current club Napoli. Much talk has been made of replacing Manchester United legend Paul Scholes with Aston Villa’s James Milner. I think Marek Hamsik would offer Sir Alex Ferguson a much more potent midfield.

Whilst James Milner has played fantastically for Aston Villa since his £12 million move from Newcastle United, Manchester United needs that little more spark in midfield. Scholes continues to defy belief with his impressive performances this season, but is seldom the player of old. Manchester United’s midfield lack a creative playmaker that can drive forward and get amongst the goals regularly. Marek Hamsik is the better choice.

Signed by Napoli in 2007 from Serie B strugglers Brescia for £4 million, Hamsik has grown from strength to strength and taken Serie A by the scruff of its neck. In his first two seasons for Napoli Hamsik was the clubs top scorer with 9 goals apiece and this season has improved again with 11 goals to his name. Hamsik averages around a goal every three games which is impressive for a midfielder. He is also prolific for his national side and was a key player in Slovakia’s surprise qualification for the World Cup in South Africa. With 8 goals in 30 caps, it can be seen Marek Hamsik at only 22 yrs of age is of international class.

What Hamsik would offer Manchester United is pace, quick feet and the eye for a pass. Furthermore Marek Hamsik has a knack for being in the right place at the right time to put the ball in the net. He is exactly what Sir Alex Ferguson requires next season. Rumours have been rife that United have been watching him all year, but Hamsik is believed be on the verge of signing a new contract at the Naples side. President of Napoli Aurelio De Laurentiis said ‘We are delighted to have Marek in our family,’ in an interview with Radio Marte. ‘With his agent we have already discussed the extension of contract. In May, we will define everything.’

So if Manchester United were to make a move for the £25 million valued Marek Hamsik it will have to be sooner rather than later. Aston Villa’s James Milner would do a fine job in that position and would probably come slightly cheaper than Marek Hamsik. Yet the Slovakian continues to get better and better and could easily take some of the burden away from Wayne Rooney at Manchester United.
