Harry Redknapp is a media dream and he’ll always guarantee to give the Press a line that they can manipulate in their respective papers the following day. I actually find the guy extremely transparent and take the majority of his statements with a pinch of salt.
Harry’s latest was that he has no intention of making a move for Upson, James, or any player for that matter as he is happy with his lot. Coming from a manager who has bought 19 players in the last five January windows, I find that extremely hard to swallow and my own view looking in as a neutral is that Redknapp would be crazy not to strengthen. The current Tottenham squad is strong, don’t get me wrong, but if the North Londoners are going to make a concerted effort to break into the Top Four this season then there are one or two areas that definitely need improving. Centre midfield is one area, as is another striker that can take the goalscoring burden off Jermain Defoe. Crouch and Keane are good players, but they are hardly prolific or in fact clinical in front of goal.
As I say what Harry Redknapp says and what he actually does usually doesn’t add up, especially in the transfer market and I personally wouldn’t be surprised to see two or three new additions in the January window. I actually think that Matt Upson would be an excellent addition to bolster the backline, as would a move for Sulley Muntari or Sandro in midfield to bring competition to Huddlestone, Palacios and Jenas. Despite Harry’s claims that there is nobody out there who he is remotely interested in signing this January, I’m sure I am not the only one who feels that it is a feeble attempt by Redknapp to pull the wool over our eyes.
