Hernandez move makes sense for Liverpool

No matter how Liverpool’s season ends, this summer will be pivotal for the Reds. Get into the Champions League and Jurgen Klopp’s side need to seize the advantages that brings in terms of attracting players, while if they miss out it’s essential the Merseysiders strengthen the glaring weaknesses in their squad and, in the words of Steven Gerrard, “go again”.

One real issue for Liverpool seems to be left-back, with James Milner having been crowbarred into the role this term. Although the veteran midfielder has impressed, using him long-term doesn’t seem a viable option, which makes links with Theo Hernandez intriguing.

The 19-year-old left-back has been enjoying a stellar season on loan at Alaves, which has, according to Cadena SER, attracted the Premier League heavyweights. It’s claimed that they are willing to quintuple the teenager’s salary and trigger the €24m (£25.6m) release clause in his Atletico Madrid contract and judging by what he brings to the table, he could be a good fit.

Indeed, Hernandez has wowed with his 56 take-ons in La Liga action, while his 17 chances created, 81% pass success rate and three assists further hint at his attacking prowess. On top of this, he has won 41 tackles and made 35 interceptions in 25 outings, showing that he contributes in his own third, too.
