Football FanCast guest columnist Ian Thomas doesn’t feel that this is the kind of Cruz that Wenger should be looking at this summer.
It is very rare that you would ever hear me hoping that Arsene Wenger will think twice about throwing money at player’s but in Roque Santa Cruz’s I feel there is some justification.
Of course we have all been screaming at Arsene Wenger to throw caution to the wind and splash the cash and it has been incredibly frustrating to say the least. You only have to see how crazy we are for Andrei Arshavin to know how much we have been crying out for something different out there and a player that can lift us off our seats; it was a £17m gamble that is paying off and we can only hope we bring in another three or four top quality stars to aid our pursuit.
According to the majority of reports this week Santa Cruz has been linked with a move to Arsenal once again with Wenger a known admirer. It is thought that we won’t have to pay the apparent £18m get out clause and that a price closer to £12m is likely to see us secure our man should we so wish. Don’t get me wrong I am a great admirer of the player and certainly understand what he could bring to the team, but one look at his injury record over the years paints a concerning picture. Only 223 League games in 10 years (you do the maths) is hardly something to bowl us over and surely the last thing we need is another potential sick note within our ranks. For £12m I would like a striker that is ready to play week in week out, not someone who will be potentially in and out of the side. Haven’t we had enough of injury problems to last us a lifetime in the past two seasons, surely we don’t need to add to them?
Am I alone with my concerns about Santa Cruz, or do you think it is worth the gamble?
