Football FanCast guest columnist Jon Bryson feels that Rafa should move quickly for Sylvan Distin, in light of Agger's latest injury woe.
With news that Daniel Agger's troublesome back has flared up again, Rafa may have little option but to re-enter the market place and bring in suitable cover. The loss of Hyypia has certainly done us no favours here and I expressed my concerns about needing to replace the Finn weeks ago, only to be shot down by Liverpool fans who suggested that I didn't know what I was talking about.
A big part of me championing the need for reinforcements was because of Agger's injury record at the club and how reliable will his fitness be over the course of next season. Fortunately last year we were able to get away with it, even when Skrtel was out, but we no longer have Hyypia to bail us out. I accept that we could perhaps move Arbeloa in centrally or give Darby a chance at centre half, but I would rather see Rafa look to bring in someone with greater experience, especially with the importance to make the step up next season. We really cannot take chances; therefore Rafa shouldn't leave any stone unturned.
There are certainly some decent candidates out there and for me the ideal recruit is Sylvan Distin, who is set to join the Pompey exodus. The Frenchman is vastly experienced, a strong central defender and most importantly is that he is cheap and readily available. Apparently Aston Villa is interested in signing him and reports suggest that he is set to open talks with them, but surely Rafa, with news of Agger's injury, should look to move in and try and entice him to Anfield instead. While Villa may have the slight edge as they will guarantee him first team football, surely the lure of the Champions League and the chance to challenge for a title would tilt the balance firmly in our favour.
