Injuries have inadvertently saved his Spurs career

Football FanCast guest columnist, Pete Webber, looks how defensive injuries have inadvertently saved Huddlestone's Spurs career.

One player who I was convinced was heading for the exit door this summer was big Tom Huddlestone. This was not because I don't believe Harry didn't rate him and was prepared to sacrifice him in order to raise transfer funds, it is just the big man came out towards the end of the season claiming he needed regular first team football.

I suppose we have Capello to thank for that, as the Italian's praise of him must have triggered to the Hudd that perhaps his talents are being wasted on the bench and a move for first team football would be in his best interest. In many ways Fabio could be right, but the last thing we needed was him sticking his nose in and unsettling the mix.

I am a huge fan of Huddlestone and really believe he has a lot to give the football club if given the opportunity. He is a hugely talented footballer, arguably one of the best passers of the ball in the country, but what he also has is great flexibility in his game which allows him to fill in at centre half as well as midfield. Fortunately for him injuries this pre-season has meant that Huddlestone has been given a regular run-out in the first team as he has been filling in for the injured trio King, Woodgate and Dawson and he now has the opportunity to prove his worth

"I played quite a few games there for Derby before I came to Tottenham but it is just a case of getting used to it again," Huddlestone said.

"If the manager is struggling with players for the beginning of the season and he wants me to do the job there then I will work on it in training. I do feel fairly comfortable there." (Football365)

They say one person's misfortune is another one's gain and that has certainly been the case for Tom Huddlestone and you would think that circumstance has now dictated that Harry cannot afford to let the big man leave the Lane. It also gives the Hudd one last chance to win his ‘spurs', until January at least.
