Is Sir Alex using his powers of persuasion on the big man?

Football FanCast guest columnist Joe Kennedy
wonders if Sir Alex is using his powers of persuasion with Edwin van der
Sar.

Edwin van der Sar has come out today and claimed that
he'll make a decision over his future in December and whether he intends to hang
up his gloves or not. I have to say I am surprised, as I already thought that
decision had already been made.

Maybe I am mistaken and perhaps someone can put
me right if I am, but didn't he claim at the start of the summer on signing his
one-year deal that this would be his last season in football? So what has
caused the sudden change of heart and the need to review his future; is he
simply pining for football, having sat out the start of the season and having
to watch from the bench, or is Sir Alex using his power of persuasion in asking
the big Dutchman to have second thoughts about retiring, given that Foster is
clearly struggling to make the grade at present and not ready to take the
reins?

Peter Schmeichel came out yesterday and
suggested that Van der Sar is certainly capable of going on longer and cited
that he perhaps was a little premature himself in quitting Old Trafford. I
totally agree with the Great Dane and goalkeepers certainly have the ability to
go on and into their early 40s, and I really hope that Edwin chooses to stay
on, because firstly there is a big shortage of keepers anyway that are on the
market and secondly because I don't think our two in reserve are ready to step
in at present.

Good goalkeepers are like gold dust and when you
have one, you need to maintain it, as we found out to our cost that attempting
to replace them is no easy task. When Schmeichel left we saw a series of
failures from Bosnich, Barthez, Tiabi right through to Carroll, before Van der
Sar came in and saved the day in more ways than one. The last thing we need is
the same carry-on to happen in the coming seasons so if we can get another
season out of him and perhaps send one of the others out on a season long loan
to another Premier League club, then perhaps it will make the transition all
the more smoother. At the moment they are not ready and that is why we need the
Dutchman to stay.
