Arsenal are in desperate need of one following the possible departures of Mikael Silvestre, Sol Campbell and William Gallas this summer.
As always, Wenger has a few targets in mind and has been strongly linked with several centre-backs so far this summer.
However, it is believed that the Arsenal boss is very keen on acquiring the Lorient centre-back Laurent Koscielny, but what exactly do we know of the player?
Well first off, he is a French footballer of Polish decent who (like stated above) currently plays for Ligue 1 side FC Lorient. Laurent Koscielny is 24 years old, and primarily (by trade) is an accomplished centre-back.
The 6’ 1’’ defender began his playing career at the age of 18 as principally a full-back for Ligue 2 side En Avant de Guingamp, where he managed to make a total of 40 appearances in his three year stay.
In 2007 he joined Tours FC to seek out a role as a centre-back, and in his second year at the club, he managed to score 5 goals in 34 games from his defensive position (he made 67 appearances and bagged 6 goals whilst at the club).
In May 2009, Koscielny was named in the UNFP (National Union of Professional Footballers) Ligue 2’s best eleven for the 2008-09 season. Last summer the defender signed for FC Lorient on a four-year contract for an estimated £1.5 million euros, and in his first season at the club made 35 appearances and bagged 3 goals as well.
As usual Wenger has opted to target a defender outside of the Premier League, and once again it’s another Frenchman. The FC Lorient centre-back has impressed in the French league and appears to be a good player, but in England many will be oblivious of what talent the player actually seizes. All we do know is that Koscielny is a centre-back, who also has experience in the full-back position as well, which, evidently, could be useful to the Gunners this coming season following injuries to this particular area in the previous one.
The Arsenal boss does rate the young French defender highly, and for the pure fact that Wenger has a vast knowledge of French players and football in general, must only be a good sign.
It has been reported today that Arsenal have made an official approach for Laurent Koscielny, but no bid has yet been put on the table.
