The playmaker midfielder has had a rough old time of it recently at Wigan Athletic with only ten appearances all season. Clearly Roberto Martinez does not see a place for the 30 yr old Welshman in his plans. Only last month the Wigan boss said he would allow the player to leave on loan. ‘I think Jason probably needs that, he needs to play games. He has been in a mode over the last three years where he hasn’t played enough football. It would probably be a good opportunity for Jason to regain that match fitness.’ Newcastle United should be monitoring this situation very carefully as interest from West Brom is well known.
Newcastle United are storming in the Championship, promotion is looking a dead cert for the Magpies and Chris Hughton deserves much praise. Yet Newcastle has been lacking a creative force in the centre for a number of years and this has not been rectified. The Wigan Athletic maestro could be the answer. Not since Emre have Newcastle had the sort of player who can pick out a pass. The Turkish international, though well liked at St James Park was rather injury prone and dropped far too deep for my liking. Since his departure, Newcastle have lacked a player of similar ilk. Joey Barton, Alan Smith and Kevin Nolan are all fine players but very similar, strong box-to-box individuals who are not exactly neat on the ball.
Whilst at St James Park Newcastle are on fire with 18 goals in their last 4 games, away from home they play a different game with Andy Carroll as a target man and newly crowned Championship player of the year Kevin Nolan picking up the pieces. With a creative specialist like Koumas playing, would the Geordies be adopting a much more expansive on the floor game like they do at St James Park?
A mooted link between Jason Koumas and Newcastle United was aired only last month and manager Chris Hughton told the Evening Chronicle ‘When I saw that we had been linked that was honestly the first I knew about it. He’s a good player, but not one that I think will be coming here.’ I hope Hughton changes his opinion upon a likely promotion.
Newcastle United will not have the buying prowess they had a few seasons ago. Despite the size of the club, the best players are not going to want to join a newly promoted side. It’s going to be a long road to getting Newcastle anywhere nears the heights they once reached under Kevin Keegan in the mid 1990’s. Jason Koumas would be a good option for the Magpies now. The 30 yr old can unlock defences with one clever pass and contributes with goals. He has become stagnant at Wigan Athletic and needs a fresh start. Newcastle United could be a decent bet.
