So Marouane Chamakh has apparently claimed that the complexity of negotiations with Liverpool was the reason that he is set to turn down the opportunity of joining us and move to North London instead. I can’t say I am disappointed, especially given that the Moroccan is a vastly overrated player.

I never understood our interest in the player if I am honest and while a free transfer will undoubtedly please the moneymen at the football club, the reality is that someone like Chamakh is simply someone we don’t need. Unless Benitez has plans to ship out Steven Gerrard then there is no point having another player who can play in the hole behind Fernando Torres, as finding a supporting act has ever been a problem at Liverpool - it is just not having that natural goalscorer that can come in when Torres is out injured, or simply in need of rest.

According to reports in the paper Rafa Benitez is angry that negotiations broke down and he has confirmed that a deal is all but dead; however I can’t help feel that it is something of a blessing in disguise. There are plenty of freebies out there who can come in and in my view would be far more significant additions to the strike force; Jovanovic and Adriano are two for starters, at least they have proven goalscoring records for a start.
