Liverpool set to fall victim to another presidential transfer charade?

Javier_MascheranoFootball FanCast guest columnist Dan Rodgers is fearful that Liverpool may fall victim once again to another presidential showdown.

I often wonder what the Premier League would be like if we adopted these same presidential elections that happen notably at Barcelona and Real Madrid. An absolute car crash I reckon, as the chief candidates promise their club supporters this player and that one.

While some supporters may enjoy this whole process I truly believe it is absolutely ridiculous one and I am thankful that it doesn’t exist in England. Obviously there are some benefits and as a Liverpool fan it would be refreshing to know that Hicks and Gillett would only be at the football club for a set turn of office, but if the candidates are going out and over their manager’s head are promising to buy this player and that one in order to secure votes, then there is something seriously wrong.

Unfortunately Liverpool are one of the teams that has fallen victim to an over eager president who had little option but to deliver Xabi Alonso, as promised to Real Madrid and it look likes that we could be once again set to fall victim to another election campaign, as both presidential candidates at Barcelona, Sandro Rossell and Agosti Benedito line up their list of players that they intend to bring to the Nou Camp. Javier Mascherano appears to be featuring high on those wish lists, so it is absolutely no surprise that Rafa Benitez is desperate to tie down the Argentine to a new long term deal at Anfield.

“We were talking with him and his agent a month ago about our idea and his idea,

“He has two more years on his contract, we were talking before and we will sit down sooner rather than later and talk about the future.

“The last conversations that we had were very positive.” (NOTW)

It remains to be seen as to whether Mascherano will sign a new deal at Anfield; however I do fear that if either candidate publicly makes their interest known as to whether Mascherano will be so forthcoming about signing a new deal. We only had to see with Xabi Alonso last season when the links to Real Madrid started to surface that there was only one place the player was going and we can only hope that Mascherano isn’t about to have the same urges with regards to a possible move to Barcelona. Rumours have been rife, stoked up by his agent that Javier’s wife is unsettled at Liverpool and would prefer to move to the warmer climes. This has been followed up by the likes of Lionel Messi trying to entice his fellow countryman to the Catalan giants, while sporting director Txiki Begiristain continually has his say on the matter. It further adds to my concern and whilst I am hopeful that Mascherano will turn down their possible advances, I am also wary of the fact that what these presidents want they generally get, even if it does mean paying over the odds to land their man.
