Football FanCast guest columnist Laurie Higgins feels that Liverpool should do whatever it takes to tie Reina down to a new deal.
In what has been an indifferent start to our Premier League season the one player who has proved an absolute rock and a model of consistency, this season, has been Pepe Reina. The Spaniard has had to work harder than any other player, especially with the woeful performances of the back four.
I have always believed that Reina is unheralded in the Premier League and fails to get the appreciation he deserves and I like to know how many keepers have kept more clean sheets than him in the past few seasons in not only England, but in Europe. It certainly won’t be many and when you consider the amount of times he is tested in any given game then it is testament to his abilities.
The thing with top class goalkeepers is that they are a rare commodity and when you have one you need to do everything in your powers to keep them, I mean look how long we had to wait to find a decent replacement for Brucie. You look at United and Arsenal and you can see they are struggling in that department at present; therefore it just goes to show how fortunate we are to have Reina.
I see the reports in the paper are showing that Liverpool are trying to tie the Spaniard down to a new deal and are prepared to give Reina a 50%+ increase on his current contract, and I for one welcome it and if there was a player barring Torres and Gerrard that we should be bowing down to his wage demands then it is Pepe. Someone once told me that a top class goalkeeper is the equivalent to a 30 goal a season striker, in terms of points that they can bring to the team…I couldn’t agree more.
