Lost in translation, or just a ploy to land a United deal?

Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey wonders whether Vidic's mooted move to Barca was a case of a quote lost in translation or whether it was all a ploy to secure a new deal.

Nemanja Vidic has vowed to stay loyal to Manchester United after dismissing talk linking him with a move away from Old Trafford.

There had been a drip feed of speculation – not to mention a few juicy quotes – that suggested he would consider a move to AC Milan or Barcelona, but the Serbian international has set the record straight.

"Anyone who is a fan of United would only have to see how I played at Wigan to know how committed I am to United," he said, as reported in The Daily Telegraph.

"The first thing to say is that I have personally never said anything about Barcelona or AC Milan or any club. It is other people speaking about it.

"I never speak about my future, so I don't really know why someone else is. I showed at Wigan on the pitch by how I played how happy I am at this club. I'm here and I'm committed. I'll always show that with how I play in matches.

"It's not a good time for my club to be hearing those rumours. And it is not my true that my wife is not happy. I don't know how that rumour came out because she's never spoken to any newspaper."

Vidic is integral to United's success, forming an impenetrable partnership with Rio Ferdinand at the heart of defence.

United could not afford to lose a player of this standard despite the promising Jonny Evans showing that he is more than capable of stepping up to the first team.

So why the sudden turnaround? If Vidic was this put out by the rumours, why did he not come out and set the record straight there and then? Was it simply a throwaway phrase lost in translation?

It is thought that United have set the wheels in motion over a new contract for the defender even though his current deal is set to expire in 2012.

Was this whole rumour an elaborate scheme to engineer a new deal? If so, fair play to him. It worked, didn't it?
