Maybe this is the shot in the arm that Arsene needed!

Football FanCast columnist Lewis Doe thinks Arsene Wenger needs to tweak his football philosophy if Arsenal
are going to win trophies again.

An awful lot has been said about the age and the inexperience in the current
Arsenal side and never was it more evident than last night when they simply
couldn’t cope with a virtually complete Manchester United side.

It seems for years now that Arsene Wenger has been searching to try and
recreate the golden era of when Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Dennis Bergkamp,
Robert Pires and others were strolling through an entire season without being
beaten. Arsenal need to quickly dispel this and make one or two tweaks to their
current side.

Wenger purchased Andrey Arshavin for nearly £17 million, a big spending for
someone that rarely stretches the budget. The point is that he paid good money
for a high profile player and he has arguably been their best player over the
last two months. It is doubtful that anyone else in the Arsenal side possesses
the capability of being able to smack in four goals in a single game at
Anfield.

Wenger’s football philosophy is good, it always has been, but there are a
few holes starting to appear that haven’t been addressed for at least the last
three seasons. Leadership is vital, Cesc Fabregas is not a born leader and the
club need to take away pressure from their biggest asset.

Speaking in the Guardian, Wenger
just holds his hands up. He said: “Manchester
United, I have to say over the two games, deserve to go through. The tie could
have been over in the first leg and, even though I felt we had a good chance to
come back tonight, they were the better side, so congratulations to them and
good luck to them in the final. We were caught by a team that has the art to
kill and take advantage of every mistake.”

“In three minutes we conceded two
goals against a team that defends well and is sure to come out on the
counter-attack. We were really up for the fight, ready for the game, but after
the first 10 minutes it was impossible. We kept going and tried to play with
pride and desire but of course it had gone.”

What Arsenal need to do this summer is
quite simple, they need three big players. One at the back, one in the middle
of the pitch, and someone up front to complement Emanuel Adebayor. It is
difficult to see where the alternatives lie. Wenger has given his young side a
crack at success this season and it has not worked, they were found out by the
best side in the country, if not Europe.
