Premier League fans have seen Mikel Arteta make an impact on the pitch since 2004, but how well do we know the footballer?
The Spanish midfielder spent eight seasons with Everton, before cashing in with a four-year, £10 million deal with Arsenal. Arteta’s veteran presence has been a valuable asset for the Gunners, who generally field youthful players.
Arteta’s leadership has proved crucial during the club’s recent 2-0 victories at Bayern Munich and Swansea City. While fellow midfielder Jack Wilshere has been sidelined with an ankle injury, the 30-year-old has taken control of the club’s midfield.
“It’s all about control. Some people call me a control freak,” Arteta said.
In the first of PUMA’s new “It’s in My Nature With….” video series, we find out what makes Mikel Arteta tick, on and off the pitch. In the video, Arteta reflects on the beginning of his career and talks about some footballers that inspire him.
Arteta recalls facing the tough decision of choosing between tennis and football. In the end, he chose football because he enjoyed the team mentality of the sport.
Also, his favourite ever goal remains the SPL title-winning penalty he scored as a 19-year-old at Rangers.
Arteta said that Ronaldinho is the most naturally talented player he’s had the honor of sharing the pitch with. He joked, “Some of the things he was able to do with the ball, pshhh, I would get injured.”
PUMA will be asking the same questions to a selection of our athletes over the course of the season, so keep an eye out for more.
