With Kenny Jackett in place and a promise to be rid of some of the toxic chemicals that have been sat in the Wolverhampton Wanderers laboratory for far too long the all-important role of club captain looks set to be available.

Who will it be to follow in the footsteps of Billy Wright, Emlyn Hughes, Paul Ince and Paul Butler?

Although Karl Henry has stated his desire to stay and get the club out of the mess he helped put us in, it remains to be seen whether Jackett and Kevin Thelwell see him as part of their plans. A shift in focus to a younger squad means other members of the squad could be thrust into the role of on-pitch commander. Here are my top 5 options:

Danny Batth

Danny Batth is one player fans would like to have seen a lot more of last season. His run in the team that came about due to Roger Johnson's suspension yielded some extremely encouraging performances. He was inexplicably shafted for the less than popular Johnson upon his return to the side, but he made enough of an impression for fans to worry that he may not even be here for the next campaign. Thankfully he has extended his contract for this season and will surely have a chance to make himself a Molineux icon. Strong, powerful and possessing the mobility we lacked in the run-in, he has a real presence on the pitch, and having already captained the reserve side at a young age, has shown leadership qualities. Most importantly he has a whole season at a successful League One club under his belt already, after a promotion with Sheffield Wednesday two seasons ago. A fan favourite for sure.

David Davis

Like Batth, Davis is a homegrown talent who has impressed when he has been in the team. Ironically, his best performances probably came in the latter stages of our last Premier League campaign under Terry Connor. Davis was just beginning to return to form when injury against Bolton ruled him out for the campaign. A strong enforcer in midfield, Davis may not have the vocal qualities of Batth, but can lead by example with forceful runs forward and a tenacity in the tackle. Another with previous experience in League One with Walsall, this could be an excellent chance to establish himself at the heart of the new era at Wolves.

George Elokobi

Prior to a career-threatening injury in our last promotion season, Elokobi was an unstoppable force down the left hand-side. Since then he has had horrific luck with injuries, despite being what would appear to be the Greek God Zeus in human form. His performances have been erratic in recent seasons, but he will always have the adoration of the fans. The passion and emotion he plays with can only be gained by taking the route he has gone down to get into football. His tears at Brighton epitomise him as a character and many fans forgive his deficiencies because we know how proud he is to pull on the Old Gold. Someone who should cope with the physicality in League One, and has the mental capacity to be a strong voice in the changing room.

David Edwards

Amazing as it sounds David Edwards will be one of the most experienced members of our squad next season. One of few of the McCarthy era to have been retained, he is another player that came up through the divisions before joining Wolves. Not the most talented of players, but his tireless work ethic and experience of Premier League football for three seasons could stand him in good stead in the eyes of Kenny Jackett. Could become a valuable member of the squad with the helter skelter nature of English football's third tier.

None of the current squad

A mass exodus is planned, so undoubtedly that means there will be some additions to what will soon look like a rather frail and small squad. The group that we expect to be left will be young and inexperienced - especially at this level. So to bring in an experienced campaigner to guide some of the exceptional talent we have at our disposal would be a sensible thing for Jackett and Thelwell to do. At Millwall, Jackett brought in Danny Shittu, who became a cornerstone of their survival last season. Someone of that ilk will surely do no harm to our prospects of a return to the Championship.
