Football FanCast guest columnist Jim Hannah cannot believe that Hughton will have to make do with a limited transfer budget in January.
If the very prospect of Mike Ashley remaining at the helm for another year wasn't painful enough, then the reports coming out in this morning's papers that Chris Hughton will only have a shoestring budget at his disposal in the January window, in order to cement our push for a Premier League return, takes the absolute biscuit and only serve to highlight the sheer incompetence of this man.
I know I shouldn't be surprised, but isn't the whole purpose of Ashley holding onto Newcastle for another year is with the premise that we will be a Premier League club, therefore making us more appealing to potential investors? Surely the aim should then be to guarantee that it happens, rather than leave it all to chance.
We have had to put up with a lot of rubbish this summer and have been made to believe by the spin coming out of the club that the reason we have had to be cautious over any expenditure, was due to this underlining court settlement with Kevin Keegan. Being that the club got away lightly in terms of a payout, I thought this will enable us to go out and spend in January and able to strengthen the obvious weaknesses in the squad to ensure that we make a quick return to the Premier League. How naive was I to believe that would be the case, especially Ashley has the obvious intention to drag as much of his money back as possible.
The people I really feel sorry for (apart from us of course) is Chris Hughton and the rest of the Newcastle coaching team, who are working wonders on what are limited resources. They are the only ones who have come out of these past months with any credit and Ashley should be thanking his lucky stars that they have produced the return that they have. They need to be rewarded in January with a decent transfer kitty to help consolidate our great start, but it appears that they are going to have to continue to make a 'silk purse out of a sow's ear'. It is a disgrace to be honest, but should we expect anything different from this man?
