Manchester United are set for contract talks with Wayne Rooney later this month so that they can tie down the England star to a new long term deal.

A court case between Rooney and his former management company had been a hindrance to contract talks taking place, however now the matter has been settled United are eager to begin negotiations with the 24-year-old. The striker has been at the club for six years now and has become their most important player and arguably although he had a disappointing World Cup, the same applies to England.

Despite his poor World Cup, Sir Alex Ferguson believes that he will soon be back to best and that his lack of his form will not carry over into the new season:

“I don't expect a hangover, but I think there'll still be disappointment in the lad. I think all the players coming back from the World Cup who didn't do well, who didn't reach their expectations may feel that they've missed something. But that's because the World Cup's only once every four years.”

After his stunning 34-goal season United will be keen to get the contract talks completed as quickly as possible to fend off any clubs who may be monitoring the situation. It’s very unlikely that Rooney would leave Old Trafford and although the club are confident that they will get him to agree a new deal, Ferguson and the Glazers have both regarded talks with Rooney as a crucial matter.

The star striker has two years left to run on his current £90,000 a week deal and you would think that the only club he would ever leave United for would be Real Madrid. Given the kind of money they can offer and the fact that Rooney had a very good season then it’s possible he could ask for a wage increase, should that be the case then United should adhere to his demands as they just couldn’t afford to lose him.

Wayne Rooney is possibly the best striker in the Premiership and Manchester United are thrilled to have him at the club, and long will they want to see him remain there. Rooney can bring success to the side for many more years to come and he has the potential to go down as one of the greatest players ever. Therefore United need to get these contract talks done and dusted asap so they can focus their efforts on the season ahead.
