Football FanCast guest columnist Tony Lipton wouldn’t be so unhappy at seeing Riise return to Liverpool.
I have always felt that one of Rafa Benitez’s greatest mistakes was cashing in on both Steve Finnan and John Arne Riise, in favour of bringing in Dossena and Degen. In hindsight it has proved a disaster, especially when you consider the experience that they bring.
It wasn’t one of Rafa’s wisest moves, especially moving on Riise, given the variety of roles he can play for Liverpool. The Norwegian would also run through brick walls for the cause and the presence of that sort of character is seriously lacking in this team at present, especially when the chips are down. I just feel that this current team does seem to miss that and there are too many players that go into hiding, when we are under the cosh. Sometimes in games you need players that need to stand up and be counted and that is something that Riise always managed and was prepared to do.
If rumours are to be believed and Riise is prepared to move back to Liverpool in an exchange deal with Dossena, then Rafa for me shouldn’t hesitate. Yes it will mean that Benitez will have to swallow some pride in taking the player back, but even he must realise that Liverpool could do with a player of his versatility right now. Riise supposedly wants to return, there is no doubting he would ever give this club anything less than 100% should he be given the opportunity to return, then for me he is the ideal player that could groom Insua, into fulfilling his potential as an attacking full back. I don’t see what we really have to lose by doing it, I mean we are certainly not going to moss Dossena…well I won’t be.
