Champ Corner’s Steven Woodgate puts his neck out on the line and predicts who is staying and going in
So unfortunately another season is almost over
but there’s a thrilling final day in store in the Cola Cola Championship.
Any one of three teams has the chance to clinch
the last automatic promotion spot, whilst Playoff places are still very much in
And at the wrong end of the table, it will be
either Norwich City or Barnsley that will be playing League One football next
term with Southampton and Charlton.
In the race for the Premier League, Reading are,
somehow, still in a shout of an automatic place as two wins on the bounce have
given them a dog’s chance.
Reading against Birmingham on Sunday is a must
watch, too much is riding on this game for it to be ignored by the casual
If Reading win and Sheffield United fail to do
so against Crystal Palace, Reading will be the ones promoted. If Sheffield
United win and Birmingham draw then they have a return to the top flight.
But a Birmingham win will see them immediately
return to the top flight. A draw in both games will also see the Blues
Sheffield United have a difficult trip to Neil
Warnock’s Palace, who will not let the Blades have an easy ride, as this finale
is mirrored to last seasons excursions.
The playoff places and position also need
deciding as Preston’s late run have given them a real chance of claiming a
playoff place. They are at home to QPR, who would be looking to end the season
on a high.
Burnley or Cardiff City can slip out if Preston
win big and they have big games against Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday
respectively. Cardiff looked odds on to surpass Birmingham and Reading recently
but huge defeats to Preston and Ipswich Town have damaged those pipedreams.
Burnley must be exhausted with the amount of
games they have played this games, with great cup runs in the Carling and FA
Cup. The Owls will want to finish top half and their energy may be a bit too
much for the Clarets.
The relegation dog fight goes down the last day
as well. If Norwich got at least a point from their last home game against
Reading there would have been three teams in contention for the drop. However
Norwich’s defeat kept safe Nottingham Forest and Plymouth Argyle to the relief
of Billy Davies and Paul Sturrock.
Barnsley will be safe if they get anything out
of Plymouth away where Norwich have to beat already relegated Charlton for any
chance of survival.
It’s so unpredictable and it could go any way.
What you think will happen?
I’m going with Reading beating Birmingham and
Crystal Palace keeping Sheffield United to a draw.
I think Reading are due a big performance at
home and the win against Birmingham away shows who can be the better team.
Neil Warnock would love to see his old club in
the top flight but I don’t expect Palace to do them any favours.
Cardiff and Burnley will claim those playoff
places and Barnsley will be relegated, going to Plymouth for the win will not
But I have been
