Football FanCast columnist Jerome Johnstone will be sad to see Arbeloa leave, but feels it will prove a good move all round.
Alvaro Arbeloa isn't the type of player that will ever go down in the list of greats to don the red of Liverpool, but at the same time his effort and work rate for the football club can never be underestimated and will be appreciated by the majority. He has never once let the football club down in the two years he has been there despite playing a variety of roles during his time.
In many ways he is the ideal squad player to have, a vital ingredient to any side, however he has been caught between a rock and a hard place with the reported interest from Real Madrid. Unfortunately the arrival of Glen Johnson will certainly see his chances limited next season at right back, therefore when the biggest club in his homeland come calling it must be extremely hard to turn down. I doubt if any other club came in for him, whether he would be so keen to leave Anfield; but it is clear the lure of the Bernabeu will prove too much for the Spaniard.
I suppose in many ways Rafa will welcome the sale, if anything to bring some much needed funds to the club and with Degen set to finally return after a season of injuries, we have adequate back up for Johnson with him and young Stephen Darby. In many ways the deal will prove a win, win all round and although it would be sad to lose one of the most underrated players at the club, at the same time you can't begrudge him the opportunity to play in Madrid, especially as his chances will now be limited this season. I wish the lad well and thank him for the effort and commitment he put in during his time at Anfield.
