Manchester City have been linked with a whole host of players in the last few months; it is one of the perils of being the world’s wealthiest club. One of the names that keeps coming up is that of Neven Subotic, but who exactly is he?
Subotic is a 21-year-old Serbian defender who currently plays for Borussia Dortmund in Germany. He is already a full international for Serbia though he turned out for the USA at youth levels. He was also eligible to play for Bosnia having been born there but ultimately opted for the country of his heritage.
Subotic began his professional career with Mainz; he secured a place in the first team in the second division and was a standout performer in the 2007-08 season. During the following summer he followed his manager in moving to Borussia Dortmund where he signed a five-year deal. Subotic’s first season in the Bundesliga was a massive success as he impressed many with his mature performances. He was selected in the ideal 11 for the first half of the season as a result of his fine form.
He made his debut for Serbia in that season when in March of 2009 he came on as a substitute in a World Cup qualifier against Romania. There was a lot of pressure on Subotic from the Serbian media at this point as he was seen as a star of the future. His performances for Serbia were not brilliant and he came under some harsh criticism; he is still a young player learning his trade and the signs are still good for him. He is likely to be involved at the World Cup with Serbia and will be looking to make an impression.
At 6ft 4in, Subotic is an imposing presence at centre-back; he is strong in the air and reads the game well for such a young man. He remains one of the most promising young defenders in Europe despite a recent dip in form. He is physically strong and has a decent amount of pace; he has the attributes to succeed in the Premier League if any of the big clubs look to take a gamble on him. Arsenal as well as Manchester City are said to have scouted the young Serb, and the likelihood is that he will not be a Dortmund player next season.
