United’s record in the grey kit was not impressive, in the five games United wore it, they lost four and drew the other.
But on a warm sunny day down on the south coast, Manchester United were playing Southampton at The Dell. This is where the legend of the grey kit comes to life, and ends
United started the game in the grey kit. Southampton took an early lead and by half time, the Saints were leading Manchester United 3-0. As the second half approached, Manchester United emerged from the tunnel in a changed strip.
During half time, they ditched their grey kit and opted for the blue and white kit.
It’s believed that the United players were struggling to see each other. Whether it was too bright and it was hard to see the dull kit or that they blended in with the crowd, either way, the grey kit was ditched.
United’s form improved in the second half but they went on to lose 3-1. After the game at The Dell, United would win all their remaining games to win the league.
For the grey kit, just two days after their humiliating first half appearance, it was officially retired.
