Should PL duo be concerned about Mourinho’s Madrid cheque book?

It seems a sure thing that Jose Mourinho will be named as the new manager of Real Madrid any day now and many will be interested to see the world’s biggest ego arrive at one of the biggest football clubs in world football.

Los Blancos are known for their big spending and so is Mourinho who has spent a fair bit of cash on players during his time at Chelsea and at his current club (but not for much longer) Inter Milan. It is likely that he will want to bring in a few new faces, perhaps some of his old favourites, but who?

Clubs such as Chelsea and Liverpool may have some cause for concern as the likes of Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres will be on the self proclaimed Special One’s radar.

Mourinho almost tempted Lampard to Inter Milan, but the England midfielder wanted to remain close to his family after the death of his mother and decided to remain with the Chelsea fans, who showed him so much support during a difficult time. The Blues hierarchy felt the player had earned a lucrative contract which raised a few eyebrows at the time, but he has repaid the faith shown in him by becoming Chelsea’s third highest ever goal scorer (impressive for a midfielder) and entrenching himself in the west London club’s history. Lampard has won everything domestically, but is yet to win the Champions League. I doubt he would need to leave Chelsea to do this as they have come close so many times, but some may argue Mourinho can turn Madrid’s European fortunes around as he did with Porto and Inter before.

I also feel that a Torres move to Madrid is completely out of the question as he is a former Atletico Madrid player and would never move to the Bernabeu. The Spanish midfielder has been linked with Manchester City and Chelsea also, but I cannot see him going to Eastlands as they have no Champions League football and I do not think the Stamford Bridge outfit will pay the amount necessary to gain his signature.

However, Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard are far more likely than the aforementioned to move to Madrid and they will surely be tempted.

Troubled left-back Cole has had a difficult time of things over the past few years regarding his personal life, marital issues and question marks over his loyalty. Out of Chelsea’s top performers last season I feel he is the only saleable asset and likely to be missed the least. I realise he is one of the best fullbacks in world football, but he is far more replaceable than a Lampard, Malouda or a Drogba. Yuri Zhirkov cost Chelsea £18 million and sits on the bench for the club, unless he is due to be moved into a more attacking role it is arguably a bit of a waste to have him on the sidelines getting splinters in his backside.

It is also rumoured that Carlo Ancelotti wants his former talisman Kaka and the England left-back could be used as a makeweight in any potential deal as the Brazilian has not enjoyed his time at the Bernabeu so far.

Then there is Steven Gerrard, who has so far remained loyal to Liverpool and has twice refused the attentions of Mourinho when he was the manager of Premier League rivals Chelsea. But the midfielder is going to be 30 next week and it is unlikely that he will ever win a league winners medal with his current club and could relish the chance of winning La Liga with the Special One. Also, Liverpool’s financial woes may force them to sell one of their star players and I see Gerrard as the most likely saleable asset to leave the club, with the funds his transfer raises hopefully going towards rebuilding the Reds’ squad.

It could be a long summer for a few fans as they hope their clubs and players can resist the millions of Real Madrid, but it is set to be an interesting summer, things always are when the Portuguese manager is involved.
