FanCast guest columnist Luke
Glover cannot put
his finger on the reasons for United's erratic displays.
As much as I admire Sir Alex Ferguson and his
achievements as manager, I do find his continual berating of match officials,
when we don't get the rub of the green slightly irritating. The fact of the
matter is for 94 minutes we were not the better team and that Sunderland can
certainly feel aggrieved that they didn't take all three points.
It was a poor result yesterday and not for the first
time a dramatic change in personnel has failed to get a desired response by
those who stepped in. Maybe it was too big a turnaround and perhaps with the
international break upon us, he could have afforded to play players twice in a
week, but he didn't and the disjointedness was there for all to see. I would
like to say that it is the worst we have played in years, but unfortunately we
have seen it many times before, but where we had Ronaldo to bail us out on
those occasions, we no longer have it here.
We were talking about it afterwards and we all
agreed that there is something missing at United at times and something we
couldn't seem to put our finger on. Of course the loss of Ronaldo was mooted as
it always is, but the general conclusion we drew was that perhaps it is a lack
of any real leadership on the field of play and someone who can fire that
rocket into them on the pitch and get them organised, on those occasions, like
yesterday, when the team just doesn't seem able to get out of first gear and
the passing and movement of the team is extremely erratic. You could argue that
we still haven't really replaced Keane in that respect and although Neville is
vocal when he plays, he doesn't seem to have that sort or authority that the
Irishman used to have on the rest of the team.
So what is the reason for yesterday's occasions, which
we also saw this season with Birmingham at home and Burnley away? Is it because
Fergie is tinkering with the team far too often, had the team simply got use to
Ronaldo bailing us out on these sort of occasions, or do you agree with my view
that it is simply down to a lack of leadership on the field who will make sure
that standards are always maintained, regardless of the opposition?
