Spurs fans should forgive the past and embrace his signing

Football FanCast guest columnist Lee James wonders if the arrival of Viera at Spurs would be such a bad thing.

The prospect of Patrick Viera donning the white of Spurs hasn't sat well with me for obvious reasons, given his gooner past, but with Harry keen to bring him to the Lane and the player himself apparently wants to join us, would it actually be such a bad thing?

I am sure I wasn't the only Spurs fan that was unimpressed by the midfield showing last night and once again the realisation that Jermaine Jenas doesn't offer anything in the centre alongside Wilson Palacios. It was lacklustre, devoid of effort and you only had to look at the difference when Harry threw the youngsters on with Rose, Bostock and Livermore that a bit of energy and urgency was added and it's a shame their more senior teammates failed to show that same desire. I'm not suggesting that Harry should look to throw them straight in, as Bostock and Livermore are certainly not ready, but their presence out on the pitch showed the whole team responds when there is a driving influence in midfield.

If we have any hope of succeeding next season and improving our poor away form then we need a strong dominating figure alongside Palacios, in order to help us dictate the play. Unfortunately Wilson can't be expected to do it all, therefore he needs someone to share the load and if Harry thinks that Viera could bring that drive to the midfield, then perhaps we should forget the past and embrace his arrival. I reckon that Redknapp's outburst about the fact he has "done nothing wrong or killed anyone" is a tester out there for supporters to see how they'll take to his possible arrival. The fans famously played a huge part in diverting Harry's interest in Bellamy, so maybe that is the reasoning for him making his desire for the French midfielder known. Our midfield certainly needs reinforcement and despite Viera being in his twilight years of his career, could certainly do a job for the football club. Supporters just need to get over his past allegiances and embrace the fact that his presence in the midfield might just help the team.

So would Viera be such a bad signing for the club and could you forgive his Arsenal roots for the sake of the team?
