‘The Boy Has Got Skills’ – Manchester United’s Mats Daehli

Mats DaehliNorwegian starlet, Mats Daehli is the brightest prospect to come out of Norway. The Manchester United youngster has had a lot of praise and at just 18 years old, a very bright future is expected.

Daehli is a very creative midfielder. He has a great range of passing, good vision, exceptional close ball control and good awareness of what’s going on around him. Mats is very versatile too, he can play through the middle or on either the right or left.

Daehli was highly sought after. The likes of Bayern Munich and Ajax were after the youngster. But with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in charge of the reserves and with several Norwegian players in United’s academy, Daehli choose United. In another move to get Daehli to sign for United, Daehli was guaranteed a professional contract when he turned 17.

In Daehli’s first season with United’s academy, he was highly impressive. After several superb displays for the Under-18s, Mats was promoted to the reserve squad and came on as a substitute as United lost 1-0 to West Bromwich Albion. At the end of his impressive debut season, Daehli was awarded with the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year Award.

Daehli first appeared for Norway in the Under-15 tournament featuring Spain, Holland and France. Daehli was named as the player of the tournament and rave reviews started about his potential. in 2012, Daehli decided not to feature for the Norwegian youth team as he was featuring heavily for Manchester United’s Under-18s and reserve side and wanted a break. But with Norway qualifying for the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, Daehli could well return to feature for his homeland.

Daehli’s former coach at Stabaek, Morten Tveit, was full of praise for the young Norwegian.

“I think he is going to play for the first team and every coach at Man United thinks he is going to play for the first team.” Morten Tveit told goal.com

“He is one of the best players in Europe in his age group. He is the best player I have seen at his age and I have seen a lot of International players at his age. He can play right or left or even off the main striker. He can be a little bit Messi, a little bit Xavi.”

Huge comparisons for the youngster, but if carries on developing, Daehli has all the attributes to become a real star.
