It is a well known fact that Manchester City have spent a lot of money on their squad. However, building a successful team is about a lot more than simply signing some exciting players. Signings like Edin Dzeko and David Silva may grab all the headlines; however an entire team full of these sorts of players is highly unlikely to be successful. Successful sides also need some grit, experience and Premier League know-how, one player that has all of these qualities in abundance is Patrick Vieira.
Some people may underplay the importance of Vieira especially as he has only been a bit part player this season. It appears though Vieira is vital for team spirit according to Manchester City defender Dedryck Boyata. Boyata said “We have a big atmosphere in the dressing room and Patrick is one of those who makes us laugh a lot” (Manchester Evening News).
It seems that Vieira has great leadership qualities on and off the field and it’s common for successful teams to have a strong team spirit. Vieira is a player that keeps everyone relaxed and helps to build the continuity and togetherness within the squad. These sorts of things can be as important as anything he can do on the field. But he is still making a contribution on the field as well and scored in the recent 5-0 win over Sunderland.
Boyata went on to say on Vieira “He is such an important figure. He is the veteran in the dressing room, the one you can ask questions and tells you what to do when you don’t know.”
On top of the role Vieira plays for the squad as a whole, he also plays a very important part for the younger players. Vieira has now played in a lot of big games in many big leagues and can guide a young player like Boyata just starting out in his career.
There is no doubt that Patrick Vieira is playing a very important role for Manchester City that is almost as important off the field as it is on. Considering he arrived at the club on a free transfer from Inter Milan suggests that you don’t always have to spend millions to get real quality; and there is a certain level of irony that the biggest spending club in England may have signed their most important player on a free transfer.
Is Patrick Vieira really Manchester City’s most important player?
