As soon as Alan Dzagoev netted his second against a withering Czech Republic side last Friday, you could already hear the cogs of many a Premier League fan clicking away.

Young, clinical and seemingly happy to bang goals in on one of the biggest stages of all. What could possibly go wrong when bringing him to the Premier League?

But whilst the man from Beslan may indeed be the real deal, recent history is full of players who secured a big transfer after a major tournament, only to cause a combination of disappointment, financial loss and untold damage to their respective clubs.

Not every player is quite as good as their hot streak in a tournament and here are ten horror stories to make you think twice before dreaming of chanting ‘Super Dzag’ on the terraces.
