We’ve all seen the pictures of a portly Ronaldo doing the rounds, indeed it looks like the legendary Brazilian striker has set about performing his own ‘Man vs. Food’ competition in his retirement. Unfortunately, the days when a footballer could take to the pitch carrying half a cow in their stomachs are long gone, the new regimes of dieticians and nutritionists have taken over as clubs strive to achieve perfection in the modern day game.

It may be that the likes of Neville Southall, Neil Ruddock and Andy Reid will never been seen again, confined to the myths of legendary pie eaters, replaced by lean, mean athletic machines. They’ll be sorely missed however, not least by the game’s spectators who now have to direct their ‘who ate all the pies’ chants at other unwitting targets.

Despite the absence in our sport of men wider than they are tall, there are still a few current faces in the Premier League who could use the pre-season training a little more than others.
