Considering the players most recently linked with moves to Arsenal, it should be said that this summer holds plenty of importance in acquiring players for the future as well as the present. The summer of rebuild does have room for those considered squad players, even if it’s for an area of the pitch that doesn’t necessarily need addressing.
While big, marquee signings are to be expected, you’d have to believe that Arsene Wenger will stand by the approach to the transfer market that he’s advocated for the majority of his career. If a bargain is available, a club like Arsenal should be in a position to explore it.
Even though the club’s supporters will want to see a strong charge for silverware next season, this summer should provide the building blocks for a sustained challenge over the next few years at least. Some signings, therefore, will have greater implications over the long term than any short-term success.
