The phrase “there are no easy games in football” seems to echo around every press conference on a weekly basis and there are certainly a few fixtures that managers would like crossed off the football calendar altogether. Whether it’s the inevitable bad weather, the intimidating atmosphere or the questionable components of the half-time pies, some stadiums across the continent evoke an unnerving sense of dread.

The mere mention of these impending away trips invite a sharp intake of breath, followed by the immortal words “that’s a tough place to go”, as concerned friends put a protective arm around your shoulder. The prospect of stealing a goalless draw can fill you with a real sense of optimism, right up until you concede and the home crowd drown out your own valiant cries.
