Football FanCast guest columnist Marcus Kilmer agrees with Sir
Alex Ferguson that Wayne Rooney is worth every penny.
Neville came out and claimed that footballers are worth every single penny of
their weekly wage, he was roundly criticised by some supporters of needing a
dose of reality. Why I didn't agree with our Skip's sentiments wholeheartedly,
as there are many players who I would question (Nani anyone?) that actually do;
but certainly in the case of someone like Wayne Rooney he is spot on with every
Rooney, in my opinion, has been United's best player in the past three years. I
know Ronaldo was fantastic for us during that time and ultimately it was his
goals that brought the honours to Old Trafford, but none of it could have been
achieved without the industry, hard work and heart of Wayne Rooney. For far too
long I believe that his contribution to United has gone widely unnoticed,
especially among the neutrals and supporters really don't appreciate the amount
of work he puts in on the pitch. I don't know of any other player in the whole
of the Premier League that puts more work in than him and I'll challenge anyone
to prove otherwise.
was very lavish in his praise of Rooney in yesterday's press conference and he
reiterated the view that he is worth every bit of his £120k a week salary.
"You sometimes wonder about the
criticism about the amount of money players get paid," said Fergie.
"But when you look at the amount
of effort Wayne puts into his work, then he's worth every penny he's paid.
"He plays as if he means it and
it's a wonderful thing to have. When we signed Wayne as an 18-year-old kid we
thought he'd become a really top player.
"He's going in that direction,
without question. Wayne is blessed with certain ingredients that only certain
great players have. He has that great hunger and determination." (Mirror)
personally couldn't agree more and it is such a shame that a lot of other
players don't possess that same sort of appetite and desire, instead of remaining
content on the bench and happy to pick up their huge weekly salary. That show
of anger and frustration that was on display in Istanbul the other week tells
you all you need to know about the man and his insatiable will to win. Yes
players may earn a lot of money and Wayne Rooney gets a nice lump of it;
however it is £6m well spent on an annual basis at Old Trafford. He deserves everything
he gets; something that cannot be said for a lot of the others.
