Football FanCast guest columnist Peter Lawson hopes there is some substance with these James to Spurs rumours.
I have to admit that I thought David James to Tottenham was pretty much a done deal this summer and I was surprised that it didn't actually come off, given Harry's obvious admiration for the player; the fact he wanted to leave Portsmouth and more importantly our desperate need for goalkeeping reinforcement.
The rumour as to why the deal didn't actually materialise had little to do with Spurs' unwillingness to pay the £2m asking price, but the astronomical wages that James is apparently on at Fratton Park. My view at the time was that we missed a real trick in not signing him, given (in my view) the calamitous nature of our current two keepers, and why I accept that James is certainly no stranger to the odd rush of blood or the occasional slip up, I still believe that he represents a far more reliable presence in between the sticks than both Gomes and Cudicini.
According to reports over the weekend, which have been further highlighted this morning, David James is hoping to secure a move to Tottenham in the January window. Apparently James is concerned that his England place may well be in jeopardy if he remains at a struggling Portsmouth side and would welcome the opportunity to be a part of Tottenham's Champions League push.
Why it could simply be that the Press playing silly beggars and looking to raise the temperature between these two clubs ahead of Harry's first return to Fratton Park; the very fact that neither player or either club have passed judgment on the weekend reports does perhaps suggest that there could well be something in it and more than just another unfounded rumour, that the Press tend to specialise in. I personally hope that there is some substance to it, as I believe for a couple of seasons he would be an excellent signing for a club.
Would David James be a welcome addition in January for Spurs, or are you happy with your current keeping duo?
