With Champions League football all-but secured, Manchester United are getting back to their ominous best under Louis van Gaal.

Summer expenditure on new players will be a decisive factor in ascertaining whether the Old Trafford outfit can continue their renaissance and put forward a title challenge next season.

Although there are a number of areas where the Dutch maestro will want to reinforce this summer, right-back is a key position.

Antonio Valencia must be acclaimed for his improved showings this season, but if United are to go toe-to-toe with England and Europe’s best, an upgrade would be a welcome addition.

With Rafael seemingly on his way out of the club, Valencia could still be used in a squad rotation system, but a more comprehensive first-choice would make United an even more dangerous animal.

Given that Van Gaal switches between a back four and three central defenders, the new man should be comfortable as a full-back or wing-back.

Here are three excellent options for the Old Trafford outfit...

Nathaniel Clyne

The Southampton full-back has been an unheralded member of a mightily impressive Southampton team this season and looks destined for a move to a top team.

Clyne has been a real attacking force on the flank for the Saints, getting forward to offer enticing crosses and is a real handful given his pace.

A determined defender also, this English star would surely be a player that could fulfil the position for years to come at United.

Although it would cost a pretty penny to tempt the South coast club to part with their defender, Clyne would be a shrewd long-term acquisition.

Dani Alves

The veteran Barcelona right-back is out of contract at the Camp Nou at the end of the season and still has not penned a new deal with the Catalan giants.

It appears that the Brazilian is waiting to weigh up options at the end of the season and as such there is no reason why he couldn’t end up at Old Trafford on a free transfer.

Despite getting older, Alves has proven himself in Barcelona’s unrelenting recent form as a key player for Luis Enrique’s men and would bring a wealth of experience to Old Trafford.

Although it would be a short-term move, the veteran defender has the potential to significantly improve United’s starting XI.

Seamus Coleman

United failed in their efforts to sign Leighton Baines over a concerted period of time, but looking at Everton’s other flank may well reap dividends.

Republic of Ireland international Coleman is one of the most devastating attacking full-backs in the Premier League, with the star getting forward to create assists and score goals with regularity.

Coleman and his side Everton have suffered this season, with scope for a potential move as a result.

The Irishman would offer United pace and purpose going forward and make the Old Trafford side more rounded with his ability on the ball.
